College was for the birds. Moving however, Sydney had been against it. Reconnect with family? Ha, as if. She’d fought with Dallas over the move. It was really their first huge fight as a married couple. At least it hadn’t been as bad as the one in the forensics labs. Things had taken a while to come together. New house, new careers, and a new baby who had just turned two months old. Getting out of surgery and being cleared for a government job had taken just about every bit of that two months. Now here she stood looking at O’Hare. Air Marshals? Really? What the hell had Dallas been thinking when he convinced them to apply for this job? Sydney still wasn’t convinced that any of this was a good idea. Though she’d given in and now here they were. Working for the TSA by all counts was not going to make them friends quickly. Lucky for them they didn’t have to look anything more than their ordinary selves. That was an easy role to play. Sydney hadn’t had much to say since they’d gotten things moved into the smaller house. Downgrading wasn’t the issue, it just wasn’t home yet. Sydney felt oddly enough more comfortable at this moment, than she had in the last few days. Though this was the first time she’d left Emerson with a sitter and she was constantly checking her phone to make sure everything was okay. Sydney didn’t trust people. It had just come with things. Right, she couldn’t be watching over their daughter constantly. No.. sitters were…. Okay Sydney, breathe.

[attr="class","drewnah"] [attr="class","drewleft"] [attr="class","drewleft2"] | [attr="class","drewright"] The white picket fence lifestyle hadn't worked out. Things had gone okay at first, but Dallas had soon gone stir crazy. He was a man of action. Being a college professor was too quiet. As much as Dallas tried to pretend otherwise, he and Sydney were made to be agents – and they'd been good at it too. A job they'd been even more successful at when they were partnered up. Convincing Sydney had been another matter entirely. After running into Britt and Tanner – her two siblings – in the hospital, Dallas had made the case for her to reunite with family. Despite her steadfast claims to the contrary, he believed having them around would be good – for everyone involved. Perhaps more importantly, they needed to stop living a lie. So Dallas proposed a more exciting lifestyle that would still be relatively safe given two month old Emerson. Now they were back in Chicago – a city Dallas had thought never to see again – looking out over an airport that would serve as their home base of operations when they weren't in the air. It wasn't as if they had a lot of choices. Several agencies, including the DEA, still considered them too toxic to bring back. The Air Marshals had been willing to give them a chance. That had been enough. "First day on the job. Shall we meet the new boss?"

The last thing Sydney had wanted was to reunite with her family. She’d understood why Dallas wanted her to do such a thing. Inevitably she had given into returning to Chicago, but she was still not so certain about dealing with her twin. Sydney hadn’t lost her brunette look, something she had grown fond of over the last year. The less she looked like her twin the better anyway. After blowing things for them with the DEA and letting down the team, Sydney wasn’t so sure that she was really ready for this. As usual, Dallas was ready to dive into things head first while she was still dipping her toes in the water. Though anything had to be better than grading papers and deciphering handwriting that couldn’t be read. Not to mention the people who wanted to do this for a living and couldn’t do the simple steps to get there. The ones who wouldn’t make it or would end up dead. Meeting people. Sydney hated meeting new people, which was in part why working with Dallas made things easier, and it made her a great agent. She could reasonably keep a distance when she needed to do so. “Have to at some point.” She replied making the statement. She slipped her phone back in her pocket. No, Beth and Tanner had things with Emerson under control, she was sure of it.

[attr="class","drewnah"] [attr="class","drewleft"] [attr="class","drewleft2"] | [attr="class","drewright"] Dallas caught Sydney periodically glancing at her cellphone – a nervous habit, but one he couldn't really blame her for, considering the newest addition to their family. The only one they would ever have. Maybe that had made them both more protective than usual. He placed a comforting arm around Sydney's back. "I trust your brother and his girlfriend. Who better to watch out for Emerson than a paramedic?"
This wasn't the first time they had talked about this. It had come up several times – over the past couple of days especially. If they were going back to work, they needed someone they could trust to watch after the baby. As Air Marshals, they would be expected to travel frequently. And, while the hospital run-in with Brittany and her husband hadn't gone as smoothly as anyone would have liked, the fact Tanner and Beth had stepped in to resolve the situation had caused them rise to the top of the list of potential candidates. Neither Dallas nor Sydney had wanted to pull a random stranger off the street. Teaching students how to do his old job just wouldn't cut it any more. This – being back in the field, even if it wasn't with the DEA – would help keep him sane. That meant meeting the new boss, even if Sydney still didn't sound thrilled with the prospect. Heading through the secured doors back to the collection of offices that comprised the Air Marshal's headquarters here in Chicago, Dallas teased her about the upcoming job. "You never know, Sydney. They might even keep us together. Married couple on a plane makes for a pretty decent cover."Sydney Dumaine [attr="class","drewright2"] |

Sydney leaned into the arm around her back. “Fair point.” She replied. Why did he always have the answer to everything? Right she needed to stop worrying about their daughter and focus on her job. As Dallas had said, Beth had things under control. Though trusting family she had never met was still nerve racking. But she trusted Dallas and if he said everything was going to be fine, then it would be. Taking a much more professional stance beside Dallas she headed into the building. When he started to tease hr about the whole being together thing she gave him a look. It was rare that there was more than one Marshal on a flight but it could happen maybe. He seemed entirely too optimistic about this whole thing. “If they want me to give up the best partner I’ve ever had they might have to reconsider their job offer.” Part of her was serious. Sydney needed to get back out and go to work but at the same front staying home with Emerson could have been an option. Though everyone knew that Sydney would go crazy if that were the case. She’d had been crazy with worry over not being able to reach Dallas, and Emerson didn’t need to feed off of Sydney’s worry. When their boss came to greet them, Sydney decided now was the time to keep her mouth shut unless spoken too. Though she was polite and offered a hand in greeting as well as a professional sounding, “Good Morning Sir.” This was a bit different from the DEA but not in the way of covers. Covers had always been Sydney’s thing. Every flight tended to have a certain mix of people. Some flights were more tourists while others were more business people.

[attr="class","drewnah"] [attr="class","drewleft"] [attr="class","drewleft2"] | [attr="class","drewright"] The element of the unknown didn't scare him. Dallas had jumped into the white picket fence lifestyle without so much as a second thought – even if it hadn't worked out. So, yes, he was willing to take a risk, walk into their new boss's office, and see what happened. In some ways, this job figured to be similar to their previous career as DEA agents; in others, very different. The truth was, Sydney had always been the better agent – better at tactics, better at blending in. Taking a seat, he was curious to see what came of this meeting. "Dallas and Sydney Dumaine," Harrison began, presenting the epitome of a consummate professional, as he flipped through their files. He always came across that way at first – a problem compounded by the business suit and tie. Harrison had reviewed their information before the couple had stepped into his office, but it kept his hands busy, so he kept looking. "Not your real names, of course. The DEA read me in on that fiasco."The two had gone from partnered agents to married. Presumably with something else going on in between. It wasn't hard to guess what that was. "You should, no doubt, be aware of our policy regarding couples – married or otherwise – which requires you to work apart from each other in the field. I'm sure you're going to tell me all about why you should be the exception." Harrison leaned back in his chair. There were times – like now – he wouldn't have minded having a microwave in his office. He could throw in a bag of popcorn, while Dallas and Sydney provided the entertainment: a, hopefully, clever list of reasons that were sure to follow. "So lay it on me."Dallas beat Sydney to the initial punch. For someone that didn't really play nice with others, she was a rare exception – someone he had grown to trust with his life. Though an Air Marshall typically worked alone, Dallas had no interest in going back to the way things were. Like Sydney, he wanted to maintain a good thing. "Because our record together speaks for itself."Harrison shrugged, but refused to give ground. Even if he had more or less made up his mind before he'd met the Dumaines. Their track record together was compelling. "It does, but I value creativity and the ability to improvise from my Marshals."Dallas didn't even bat an eyelash. The years of undercover work hadn't dulled the ability to respond right back. "Creative. Like the FBI screwing up our paperwork submission and marrying us? Divorce is expensive."Sydney Dumaine [attr="class","drewright2"] |

Of course the DEA read him into the mess. Though the fact he was harping on her past mistakes the moment they walked through the door was a bit agitating. But Sydney like a good agent had always been good at hiding her agitation. When the person you slept next to could kill you at any moment during an undercover operation you were good at hiding things. Though Sydney was filing his demeanor away in her head trying to get a read on him. He was someone she was likely to butt heads with if she was to interact more than needed. He wanted reasons for why they should break the rules. Sydney was glad Dallas said something first. Though she knew she was going to have to speak. “If I was in a civilian capacity. I’d look for the lone wolf as an air marshal. Someone who kept to themselves, didn’t talk to anyone on board. I’d also look for the person who couldn’t sit still and kept getting up to go to the bathroom the furtherest from them so they could see everything.” Sydney took a breath but clearly wasn’t finished tactically explaining. “By putting two people who are familiar with each other in the same setting, you take away that lone wolf aspect. The marshal blends into the group more and are less prone to someone figuring out who they are.” She didn’t have to explain that two eyes were better than one. That was just common sense. Dallas’ divorce comment made her want to smack him with something. It had taken her a while to adjust to their married life, and having a family and he joked about that now? Though now was not the time to address that, given current company. “Not only that but some flights are traditionally tourism heavy where people are going on vacation. And who goes on vacation alone. The Marshal is then a sitting duck and high risk. Business meeting in Tahiti isn’t really going to fly. If I were someone looking to take out a group of people. I’d target low risk flights where the chance of agent assignment was lower for any number of reasons.” She set her weight into her hip. “I understand that budgeting constraints to flights that need to be covered make flights have one marshal on board but people know it and they profile for it. So why not throw two agents into a flight and give priority flights more security and less of a chance of the marshals being picked out from the crowd?” It was just a thought. If only her boss knew what she was really thinking.

[attr="class","drewnah"] [attr="class","drewleft"] [attr="class","drewleft2"] | [attr="class","drewright"] Harrison chuckled at the divorce comment. It technically fit the requirements he'd given the two partners, even while hitting precariously close to the truth, but the best lies were partly steeped in the truth. Their paperwork getting screw up checked off that box. Checking off the creative box, however, might have earned Dallas a verbal tongue lashing later. "Probably not something you want to say when your wife is sitting right next to you. Trust me, I know. However, you both raise fair points. In fact, Sydney, this is something Marshals have been weighing for some time now. Your supervisor at the DEA spoke highly of you both. So, when the opportunity presented itself, we decided to make you our test case. See if something like this can work – no pressure."Dallas took that moment to jump back into the conversation, sparing only a glance to see if Sydney would be okay with arrangement – although, judging from their earlier chat outside the office, he figured she would be. All things considered, Dallas wasn't quite sure how he felt being thought of as a guinea pig, but it was a change to jump back into the thick of things, partnered alongside Sydney. It wasn't like they had a lot of choices, if they wanted to work for an armed federal agency again. The DEA sure wouldn't take them back – not for a lack of trying. "I'm in," Dallas confirmed. Harrison looked across his desk at the other half of the partnership. That just left Sydney to confirm or reject the offer. He might not have said as much, but he was hoping to get both of them on his team. Like Dallas had said earlier, their track record spoke for itself. Sydney Dumaine [attr="class","drewright2"] |

Sydney just listened. Oh she was fairly certain that Dallas would be sleeping alone tonight, if not on the floor somewhere else. That wasn’t so say that Sydney wasn’t against sleeping in the same room with Emerson. Though her thoughts shifted as she read over her partner’s body language in a quick second. He wanted her approval before… too late he’d already said it. “Makes two of us.” Sydney confirmed though she wasn’t so keen on being a guinea pig that’s exactly the creativity line she’d just pitched. Though honestly how could she just back out of something she said the DEA needed to do in the first place? There was moment where she was lost in thought. Though it was her thoughts drifting back to their daughter. Sydney was careful to keep her body language as well as her direct eyesight hidden. It was a undercover skill that had more turned into a habit when sitting in a room with people she didn’t know, while she assessed the situation. Though she soon relaxed taking a few breaths. She hated jumping through hoops.

[attr="class","drewnah"] [attr="class","drewleft"] [attr="class","drewleft2"] | [attr="class","drewright"] "Excellent." Harrison nodded, pleased that both of them were now onboard. Leaning forward in his oversized desk chair, he passed a folder to each of them. Inside were two tickets apiece – one for a flight to New York and one for a flight back to Chicago. "You have a plane to catch. Make sure you don't miss it. That won't impress your new boss. You can pick up your badges from my secretary. Also, no joining the mile high club, please."Dallas flipped his folder open to review the material, choosing to ignore the last comment. If their boss thought he had a sense of humor, the man was mistaken. So the Dumaines would be leaving today; in an hour, in fact. They would return tomorrow, but reservations for the airport hotel had been included. Dallas could call Tanner and Beth before take-off, but Sydney's half-brother knew they might be asked to safeguard a flight as soon as today. Tanner had assured him they would watch out for Emerson as long as they needed to, so they didn't have to be concerned. "We'll be onboard," Dallas curtly informed their boss. The two of them could do their jobs just fine without needing to be reminded of the basics like they were rookies on their first assignment. Both of them had been doing this for a long time, even with the short hiatus as college professors. "If you're ready, Sydney?"Sydney Dumaine [attr="class","drewright2"] |

Sydney was thankful to be out of Harrison’s office almost as soon as they had gone in there. Mile high club? Really? Sydney did well to bite her tongue. So when Dallas had asked if she was ready? “Yes, of course.” She replied in a professional mannerisms. There was no way she was going to drop the professionalism in front of her boss. The fun part about these flights was they could be themselves. Well mostly. They couldn’t exactly talk about too much sensitive things and Sydney was too protective of Emerson to even think about discussing her within ear shot of someone who could use her against them. Security checkpoints were going to be the bane of her existence. It wasn’t like she wanted to set off the metal detectors but walking around them actually seemed to draw MORE attention. So she handed her credentials off to the TSA officer and picked up her bag like a normal passenger. Shouldering her bag she turned towards Dallas and waited for him. “They really need to figure out a better system for this place. I don’t think she was even paying attention.” Sydney whispered in his ear as she stepped towards him. The TSA gate personnel had hardly looked at the badge. It gave Sydney goosebumps. To her, it spelled weak link for any former or current air marshal with a bone to pick. Hell she’d not even been validated or anything and Sydney was certainly not a familiar face yet. Maybe the agent had just been here so long, she knew her badges and knew a probationary marshal badge when she saw one? No, she wasn’t going to dwell on it.

[attr="class","drewnah"] [attr="class","drewleft"] [attr="class","drewleft2"] | [attr="class","drewright"] Once Dallas and Sydney were on the plane, they could be themselves, toss the stuffy professionalism out the window and be more… casual. It would be okay to engage in openly flirtatious conversation, share a quick kiss, or hold hands. In fact, their new boss had encouraged it – a way of blending in with the other passengers. As far as anyone else would know, the two of them were just going on vacation. After all, Air Marshals didn't fly together or pretend to be married. From their time at Solsbury, the two of them had gotten good at maintaining a coworkers with benefits relationship while still performing their jobs. Upon passing through airport security, Dallas chuckled. Trust Sydney to start pointing out all the flaws in the system. He shared many of the same concerns, of course, and just hadn't taken the time to voice the multitude of problems he'd spotted with another agency. As DEA agents, with their paths unlikely to ever cross, they probably wouldn't have thought twice about it. As newly minted Air Marshals, this was their world now. Dallas and Sydney might not be TSA themselves, but TSA could make their job that much easier or harder, depending upon how well they screened passengers. "Does TSA ever pay attention? Most of these measures aren't even preventative."On the way to their gate – thankfully, not one across the entire airport – a quick check of his watch confirmed they still had some time. About forty-five minutes, but they wouldn't be boarding quite yet. At a brisk walk, it wouldn't take them long to get there. "Head straight to A15," Dallas read the gate number off of the ticket. "Or grab something to eat for the plane?"Sydney Dumaine [attr="class","drewright2"] |

Sydney gave him a look as they went through security. “They are just following orders.” She shrugged. It wasn’t their fault the measures sucked. Someone had to carry them out. It wasn’t like these were the people in the meetings with Homeland Security trying to figure out what worked and what didn’t work. Then there was always mixed signals coming from them. “I packed some stuff I can eat; but I could do with grabbing some real food before hitting the east coast.” East Coast food wasn't exactly her thing having grown up in California. Sydney had to be careful what she ate, anything with nuts was a no go. That meant all nuts. She looked around for somewhere that didn’t handle nuts. That was almost becoming impossible these days. “Isn’t that pizza place in here that we both love?” Being DEA agents they were no strangers to airports. She was pretty sure the pizza place in here was the one that didn’t use nuts or anything even resembling them. Sydney had been shocked to learn they didn’t offer salads. That was right where they were headed anyway. “Yes, this one.” She pointed out. “Unless you have a better idea?” Sydney had been trying to lose the baby fat she had from Emerson and was on a healthier eating regiment but she could have pizza today. She had healthy snacks anyway. They were allowed to be themselves a bit in the airport itself which was nice. Sydney lightly hip checked her husband and smirked. Yes, she was totally bumping him in the direction of the pizza place. Sydney could be demanding when she wanted to be. It was her polite way of telling him that he didn’t really have a choice because she wanted pizza.

[attr="class","drewnah"] [attr="class","drewleft"] [attr="class","drewleft2"] | [attr="class","drewright"] Sydney was right, of course. The TSA agents manning the airport security checkpoint didn't make policy, they only carried it out. As much as Dallas thought their measures pointless – their actions only designed to comfort the other passengers and give them some peace of mind – there also wasn't much he could do about it. Didn't mean he had to like it. Because if TSA let a gun slip through, it could make his job harder. If TSA let a knife slip through, it could make his job harder. He nodded, holding in the large sigh he wanted to let out. Sydney took that moment to point out one of their usual haunts – 'that pizza place,' as she called it. Dallas understood Sydney well enough by now to know that even though she was asking, she wasn't really asking. His partner was funny like that. Actually, Dallas was pretty sure it was something all women had in common – not just a peculiar quirk of Sydney's. Talk about a complicated gender, to say the least. But if that's what she wanted, then Dallas had no complaints. "Pizza sounds good," Dallas agreed, allowing Sydney to steer him towards the small eatery. Snacks weren't really something he wanted her to rely on for a plane flight. With it being almost lunch time already, he wanted to grab at least one slice for himself. As they neared the cash register, he could see there wasn't much of a line. "What do you want?"Sydney Dumaine [attr="class","drewright2"] |

One thing Sydney could do was tell when Dallas wasn’t letting go of something. She just rubbed his shoulder and kissed his bicep lightly. She was blending in with the crowd so to speak more as they walked. Though Sydney wasn’t really the clingy type when it came to men. But she enjoyed dragging him around from time to time. There was fun in it. Though it wasn’t like she was going to come out and tell him that. Sydney didn’t like trying out new places as often as she could, for fear of ending up in a hospital. Snacks were a much safer alternative to something that got mixed with nuts. “I like anything here.” She had no idea what she really wanted and when it came to food she was seriously indecisive. “Airport food is always so expensive. Why don’t we split one of the combos or something” There was a shrug as the lady at the counter stared at them like they were taking too long. That was one of Sydney’s biggest pet peeves. Trying to rush Sydney was never a good idea. People had almost lost their lives for it in the past. She’d been rushed and almost gotten one of her housemates killed on his undercover operation. This was a little less life threatening but Sydney started fidgeting a bit to express her annoyance with the woman without vocalizing it.
